What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys have unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This keeps thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned it transmits a signal encoded with a four-digit code. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code is used to locate aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send an exact message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is not able to communicate via radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar queries by identifying a code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft on a busy screen.
